Sketchbook painting Alps

From childhood I had always had a keen feeling for colour combinations.

One particular memory stands out - I was about 8yrs old and making a potato print at school for which I used a sky blue together with a sweet yellow. I can’t now even remember any details of the print itself, (though I do recall the feel of the squashy potato in my hand), but , in my mind’s eye, I can still see those two colours harmonising together.
As an adult, it took me years ,rather strangely, to understand that colour was in fact the main element, the driving force behind my paintings.

I work from my home studio here in South Cambridgeshire, where I live with my husband, two daft spaniels and a clutch of hens. Being surrounded by farmland, and feeling strongly that it’s best for me to paint what I “know”, it’s not surprising that I love painting landscapes.
Not just this location though - we have visited friends in Scotland many times, in recent years sailing around the West Coast of Scotland. I always take a sketchbook and paints wherever I go to record memories of the landscapes I am experiencing. Tricky on a yacht I know, but possible!

Because colour plays such a major role, the composition of a piece has to be really rigid. I have discovered that this is essential in order to ground the high flying colour “rebels”! A good composition gives me room to experiment with various colour systems. I enjoy the feel of the brush making its mark on the surface, so my paintings tend to be quite expressive. A Semi Abstract style suits what I feel about any given subject.

I enjoy painting on different sizes of canvas or panels. Often when I have been working on some very small pieces, a large canvas provides a major sense of freedom. Masses of paint and large brushes!

WHERE TO SEE MY PAINTINGS
I show my paintings in various galleries - Cambridge Contemporary Art, The Gallery Maldon, County Art Cheshire and Art in East Anglia in Bury St Edmunds Suffolk.
Paintings have also been accepted for recent Open submissions with Chelsea Art Society and The Society of Women Artists who exhibit at The Mall Galleries London.
I am a member of the Cambridge Drawing Society and show with them in the exhibitions every April and October.
Each July I exhibit in Cambridge with a group of artists and makers for Cambridge Open Studios. I enjoy the interaction here with the visitors particularly.
